about

Sowell's new compilation "2016 - 2023" is a collection including a majority of work he made between those years. It is a disjointed experience as he shifts drastically from genre to genre, never settling in one scene too long. It should be treated more as a gallery or collage than a cohesive listening. Although some recordings are as old as 2016, most were made between 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. This release is special as it tells a story of artistic evolution and the endless journey to find ones own sound.
More information provided below.

This compilation is split into sections to make distinctions between time periods and genres. Below are explanations for each section in Sowell's own words:

"The individual that enjoys each section of this compilation is a very specific type of person. As the genres switch so aggressively - from one end of a spectrum to another - I'd believe this person to be quite rare."
Section 1 (Tracks 1-8):
"This contains my earliest amateur electronic guitar works. Has some of my first recordings, a few of which were worked on for multiple years (not for any spectacular reason, though). Becomes more abrasive over time as it nears my harsh noise work. I still enjoy some of these recordings, especially 4 & 5, but generally not the most impressive stuff."
Section 2 (Tracks 9-13):
"Here is my early harsh noise work, with an emphasis on harshness. A lot of guitar was still used, but this time with an even greater deal of manipulation. Some field recordings were used (although my equipment was minimal at best). I think at this point Masami Akita was my biggest inspiration - it shows."
Section 3 (Tracks 14-23):
"Quality improves drastically after I finally purchased proper equipment, although you may notice some inconsistencies as I tried different devices. Over the course of multiple years I have recorded hundreds of different field recordings, most of which over half an hour long. I didn't want to fill this compilation with all of them (although I may do such a thing in the future), so I selected some of my favorites for this compilation. Field recording is an addiction of mine. Listening to them is the most enveloping experience I can have."
Section 4 (Tracks 24-34):
"Complete works, most of which I released over the past few years. There are a few recordings here that never saw the light of day for various reasons, along with some new ideas. The last two tracks are the most recent and representative of some future work."

Additional information from Sowell:
"The title for this release had to be changed twice from "2016 - 2021" to "2016 - 2022" and finally to "2016 - 2023" since it took so long to make. I'm looking forward to continuing my release of music, and have a live concert planned this year which will be available on Bandcamp after. Stay tuned."
